Supervising Aboriginal Staff

This workshop is for those who supervise Aboriginal staff. It includes understanding histories that impact on Aboriginal peoples' lives; and developing knowledge and understanding of experiences of Aboriginal peoples in the workplace. In addition, culturally safe environments are discussed with an emphasis on strategies and culturally appropriate behaviors and language. A strengths-based approach is used that includes resilience and self-care for Aboriginal workers.

What to Expect

1. Discuss key historical, social and political events that impact Aboriginal peoples’ contemporary lives.

2. Examine self as a context for understanding Aboriginal peoples.

3. Critically reflect on own leadership in Aboriginal contexts.

4. Outline experiences of Aboriginal workers in the workplace.

5. Discuss strengths and challenges of Aboriginal Workers in the workplace.

6. Understand the importance of culturally safe environments for the Aboriginal workforce.

7. Discuss culturally appropriate communication including yarning, respectful language and terminology.

8. Develop strategies for addressing work challenges.

9. Develop knowledge of cultural wellbeing and self-care for Aboriginal workers to thrive.
